Hyundai Palisade SUVs Recalled for Windshield Wiper Problem

Apr 30, 2023Apr 30, 2023

The motor for the driver-side wiper may fail because of snow and ice buildup on the windshield

Hyundai has announced the recall of more than 167,000 Palisade SUVs because of a problem with the driver-side windshield wiper. Snow and/or ice buildup on the windshield could obstruct the wiper arm and prevent the wiper from working. The resulting buildup of snow or ice could reduce driver visibility in inclement weather, increasing the risk of a crash.

The problem is due to a circuit breaker that might trip if snow or ice builds up between the area below the windshield and the wiper arm. This would result in the wiper temporarily stopping operation to protect the motor.

The wiper will resume operation after the circuit breaker resets and/or the windshield is cleared of any obstruction. The driver won't get any warning, though the recall notes that the "wiper system… could function intermittently." Drivers who note this happening during inclement weather should pull to the side of the road and clean off any accumulated snow and/or ice when conditions allow and it is safe.

This is an expansion of recall number 22V627, which covered more than 122,000 Palisades from the 2020 and 2021 model years.

Hyundai will notify owners via mail, starting May 16, 2023.

If you plug your car's 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA's website and a recall doesn't appear, your vehicle doesn't currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.

The Corvette jump-started my love of cars, and the Audi led me to automotive journalism, track days, and amateur car repair. In my free time I cycle as much as possible, no matter the season.
